Gypsy Echoes

One of the student performance groups of Cairo Fusion, specializing in group choreographies, bellydance technique and over-all entertainment.

As a large group of dancers, they display a diverse range of styles from traditional to fusion, while always "keeping it real"!

Meet the Gypsy Echoes:

Akili Alima

(member since February 2005, MAZANA 2007)

Akili is one of the original members of Cairo Fusion. She started taking ballet and tap dancing lessons when she was three-years old. In January 2005, her friend Hannah invited her to join her in trying out a belly dance class. Always being intrigued by belly dance, she agreed. Her friend ended up moving, but she was hooked. Belly dance is the fabulous combination of moving her body, costumes and jewelry. "Belly dance forever!!"

"Performing has always been a love and passion of mine and belly dancing always a beautiful intrigue. I had a desire to belly dance long before I actually got up the courage to do it, but once I did, there was no going back! I absolutely LOVE it! Being with Cairo Fusion has been not only an awesome opportunity to learn and dance, but to grow and build awesome bonds with all my sisters!"

Being a drummer, I was immediately drawn across Hyde Park to the beat of the music that is Cairo Fusion. I became enraptured and mesmerized by the beautiful confidence and flowing grace of the dancers. My heart skipped a beat and told me that I absolutely must learn how to dance like that, even though I didn't really believe I could. I started classes right away before I could talk myself out of it, and on April 27, 2009 I was honored to join the Gypsy Echoes. Belly dancing with Cairo Fusion has ignited my passion within, inspired expression without, and graced me with new friendships to treasure. Thank you Samira!"
